Fresno police investigating officer-involved shooting

FRESNO, Calif.

The attempted robbery took place just before 6 a.m. Tuesday morning at a home on Cambridge and Calaveras. Police investigators spent hours outside the central Fresno home Tuesday morning.

Officers say three men, armed with guns, barged into the side door of the home looking to steal things from inside. A couple and three children were inside the home at the time of the incident.

"Fortunately the man who lives here was able to escape and call police from a nearby location, and when officers arrived the two were just running out of the house and the third was just driving off in the car," said Captain Dennis Bridges with the Fresno Police Department.

Officers caught up with the driver and arrested one of his partners just outside of the home.

The third attacker ran in the other direction, kicking down fences to try and get away. Police say the officer chasing the suspect shot him after he felt his life was in danger.

"The officer saw that the suspect was armed with a large semi-automatic hand gun and fearing for his safety the officer fired shots and the suspect went down right there, taken into custody," said Captain Bridges.

The suspect was hit seven times below the waist. He is expected to recover after being treated at the hospital.

Investigators say in addition to the semi-automatic handgun, he wore a bullet proof vest.

All of the suspects are between the ages of 25 and 32. Two are believed to be gang members.

Officers found a shotgun as well as some zip ties in the car and around the home.

Action News also spotted the mother and father being escorted out by police with blankets wrapped around them. Police said the couple and their kids are unharmed physically.

Police are still looking for another gun believed to have been thrown away during the chase on foot of one of the suspects.

The shooting officer is on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

Chief Jerry Dyer, who normally oversees all officer involved shootings, was not in the Central Valley on Tuesday.
