Millerton Lake's warm weather, rising water levels attracting business

FRESNO, Calif.

"I just love the water, being here and the weather, and barbecue with the family. It's really great, and it's fun," said Kevin Souriyanyong.

On Sunday, families went swimming, boating and kayaking. The recent spike in water sport activity is great for Larry Calandra's business.

"This nice weather is definitely helping us out," said Calandra.

The past week of 90+ degree weather signals the start of the busy season for Millerton Lake Rentals. The Bureau of Reclamation has also released water from Friant Dam, which is expected to draw larger crowds.

"About two weeks ago it started coming up about 1 to 2 feet a day, and it's gradually been coming up. From my understanding we are going to move from boat ramp 4 to boat ramp 2 probably before Memorial Day," said Calandra.

Not far from Millerton, Melissa Blake and her daughter Peyton ordered snow cones at a local restaurant.

"We wanted to be out of the city; we wanted somewhere that was fun, that we could just kind of let loose a little bit," said Blake.

Staff members at Sandals at the Beach Grill say when the temperature warms up, more people show up, which is great for their bottom line.

"The winter is really slow and cold. The summer is bright and busy, and everyone takes their shirts off and plays volleyball all day long," said Vanessa Ramirez.

Business owners say it's expected to get even busier there as we move into the summer months. July 4th is always the busiest day at the lake, followed by Memorial Day.
