CHP, AAA stepping up during Superbowl

AAA is offering a free Tipsy Tow service to everyone in Northern California, regardless of AAA membership.

People can call (800) 222-4357 for a free tow of up to five miles, according to AAA.

The service, which will run from 6 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday, provides a one-way ride for the driver and vehicle to the driver's home along with any additional passengers who can be transported safely in the tow truck.

The CHP, along with police and sheriff's departments in the area, will be deploying extra DUI patrols to lower alcohol-involved deaths and injuries.

On Super Bowl Sunday in 2008, 12 people in California were killed in alcohol-involved collisions, but none of the fatalities were in the Bay Area.

Alcohol-related crashes also injured 167 people statewide, and CHP officers arrested 403 motorists for driving under the influence on Super Bowl Sunday last year.

About 25 of those injuries were reported in the Bay Area, according to the CHP.

Law enforcement urges the public to help by calling 911 to report a suspected drunken driver. Callers should be prepared to provide dispatchers with a description of the vehicle, its location, and direction of travel.
