Mardi Gras Parade in Fresno's Tower District

Fresno, CA, USA Thousands lined Olive Avenue cheering for celebratory beads. A dozen local businesses sponsored floats with colorful and creative characters.

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the annual catholic series of parties that take place before Ash Wednesday. Many party-goers said despite the bleak economy, large unemployment rate, and high foreclosure numbers, today was a time to forget worries and celebrate.

"For one day it doesn't matter. For one day just party to party and have fun and all across America people are going to be doing it. In New Orleans people are going to be doing it," said Fresno resident Tegan Curtis.

New Orleans is often thought the premiere spot to celebrate Mardi Gras, but Rio De Jeneiro, Brazil is also a destinations that tops the list for Fat Tuesday fanatics.
