Tanker explodes on 91, shuts down freeway

CORONA, Calif.

Authorities said the driver lost control and hit the center divider on the eastbound side near the Corona (71) Expressway at about 10:30 a.m. The /*California Highway Patrol*/ said the driver managed to get out safely and no injuries were reported.

The accident shut down all lanes of the freeway, and eastbound traffic was being diverted into Corona at Green River Road, causing a major traffic jam. Riverside County Fire said the eastbound 91 will remain closed for at least 12 hours, if not longer. The all westbound lanes of the 91 had been opened by 3 p.m.

With 91 closed at the 71, here are the alternates:

  • If you're headed east, take the 57 Freeway north to the 60, 10 or 210.
  • If you're headed west, take Interstate 15 north to the 60, 10 or 210.

The southbound 71 Expressway at Euclid Avenue in Chino Hills was shut down.

Caltrans is expected to check the roadway once the fire is out.
