The event included traditional dances and songs, as well as an art exhibit to commemorate India's independence from British rule in 1947.
India's consul general in San Francisco attended the celebration, along with several other dignitaries. Two children gave speeches about the significance of the day, including one young man who spoke about the legacy left behind by freedom fighters.
Guest speakers also included Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin and Assemblyman Mike Villines.
In honor of India's Independence Day, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton released a statement saying the country continues to offer an example for people around the world who yearn for democracy and liberty.
