The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the Internet's naming system, in March approved the .xxx domain for pornographic websites.
The general public can't buy .xxx domains until Dec. 6 but colleges and other organizations got an advance period. They've submitted more than 80,000 applications so far.
Penn State spokesman Jeffrey Hermann said the university bought four .xxx domains in September: Penn State, PSU, Nittany Lions and The Pennsylvania State University. The child sex abuse scandal erupted there more than a month later.
Each domain costs $200 and lasts 10 years. Hermann said the price also prevents anyone from buying a domain incorporating the trademarked term with other words, such as nittanyliongirls.xxx.
