The California Highway Patrol says a small car was driving westbound on 180 when it veered into the path of a semi-truck just after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The two people in the car were killed. The semi-truck burst into flames, killing the driver and severely injuring the passenger.
"There were some of the local residents only heard the collision. Obviously they observed a fire ball as the big rig did catch on fire but not one actually witnessed the collision itself," said Brian Yokley with the California Highway Patrol.
Officers have not revealed the identities of the victims. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Both lanes of Highway 180 reopened around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.
