Encouraging fire protection systems after Clovis fire

Just days after a fire destroyed an antique shop in Old Town Clovis, firefighters are joining together with business owners in hopes of keeping it from happening again. The fire was reported to 911 dispatchers early Monday morning. Within minutes of firefighters arriving on the scene, the roof collapsed.

Thursday, firefighters met with business owners at the scene of the fire and explained the challenges that can come along with the historic buildings, like old construction and electrical systems. "We have to change tactics a little bit, we can't be as aggressive as we would be in other situations. We try to encourage fire protection systems when we can because early detection could have made a difference in this," said Michael Despain, the Deputy Fire Chief with the Clovis Fire Department.

Another session is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
