Woman found dead in a NE Fresno apartment identified

FRESNO, Calif.

Christina Flores, 44, was found dead in a Northeast Fresno apartment on Monday. And before that, the body of her husband Santiago Flores was found in San Bernardino County.

Police say Santiago and Christina Flores have only been married since April. An autopsy provided few clues about how she died.

Detectives are interviewing the couple's family and friends about their rocky relationship and what may have led to her death.

Christina Flores was the first in her family to get a bachelor's degree. Her children say she was a respiratory therapist who loved her job and never missed a day of work. But family members say she struggled when it came to picking out good men. Neighbors say they heard the couple arguing on several occasions.

Fresno police say Santiago Flores was on post release community supervision as part of Assembly Bill 109.

"He had an extensive violent crime history and we're looking at his gang involvement as well," said Mark Salazar with the Fresno Police Department. "So her background doesn't match his background."

Officers in the Southern California city of Montclair say they got calls of a possible suicide Monday when they discovered the body of Santiago Flores. They notified Fresno police so they could contact his wife. But, when officers went to the couple's apartment, they found her dead, too.

Family members say they last had contact with Christina on Thursday. Coworkers told Action News they were concerned when she didn't show up for work either.

Investigators say the couple met early this year and married a short time later.

"We know that supposedly she met him on a website," said Salazar. "This website, we've looked into it to see if there's any clues and we haven't found anything additional."

Investigators are hoping toxicology tests taken during Christina's autopsy will give them more insight into how she died. There were no signs of trauma on her body.

Christina's children say their mother did not have any health problems and was not a drug user. They do not believe she died of natural causes.
