Man stabbed to death after dispute in Southeast Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

Fresno police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the deadly stabbing. The stabbing happened just after 2 a.m. near Matus St. and Geary Ave.

Authorities have not released the victim's name but friends have identified him as 23-year-old David Jimenez. Police said this stabbing stemmed from a personal dispute, and everyone involved was in their 20s and knew each other.

Candles and balloons surrounded a photo of David Vasquez on the sidewalk of the street corner where he was stabbed. The people he was with in his final hours made the memorial for him.

"He was a great guy, he was a good friend," the victims friend Barbie Lopez said.

Jimenez's brothers and sisters came to see the street where their brother was stabbed. For the first time they met the friends their brother was with when he was killed.

"I just feel horrible for them, his mom and his sister-- seeing them crying," Lopez said.

The family is making funeral arrangements.

The victim's friends said they went out Saturday night and went to someone's house when several people came over and a fight started. Police were called out to the Southeast Fresno neighborhood shortly after the stabbing and investigators remained on scene for several hours.

Witnesses described more than a dozen people involved in a fight that happened in the middle of the street. The fight ended with the Jimenez stabbed and lying on the ground.

"Everything just went hectic, it just hit the fan fast," said Steven Contreras, the victim's friend.

Steven Contreras saw the fight unfold. He said it started at his house before moving outside. While the details are still being pieced together by detectives, Contreras said the fight stemmed from a personal dispute between two men and several people got involved.

Contreras said the victim did not start the fight but somehow ended up getting involved.

"He went down the street and I guess some boy stabbed him, I saw him, I don't want to say more, but I just know they stabbed him twice, and he fell right there in front of us, and then they took off in a white car," said Barbie Lopez, the victims friend.

Police say the fight is connected to a club on Maroa Ave. Contreras says the suspect had gotten into a fight at Club Legends Saturday night and brought the fight over to his house.

Contreras said he doesn't know the suspect personally but they knew many of the same people.

Police have arrested a suspect in this stabbing. Friends plan on holding a candlelight vigil for Vasquez at the corner where he was stabbed Sunday at 8 p.m.
