From surviving to thriving: Fresno woman defying all odds

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Among those running the Two Cities full marathon course is a Fresno woman, defying the odds.

Becky Greer is a cancer and brain tumor survivor who isn't letting her health obstacles slow her down. The mother of four is hoping her story will inspire others to never lose sight of their goals.

For Greer the challenges she faces off course are what fuel her every training session. In 2005 the Fresno mother of four underwent chemotherapy and 30 radiation treatments. Then four years after being cleared of cancer doctors diagnosed her with Acoustic Neuroma, a rare brain tumor that impacts hearing and balance. "There was a lot that happened to me that really could have left me on my back," said Greer.

Brain surgery kept Greer off the running circuit for a short while and now, about a year later, she's just days away from her first full marathon. "I don't care if I have to crawl the last 10 miles, I'm gonna finish it," she said.

The 44-year-old says it's her faith that keeps her going. When she needs extra inspiration motivational quotes and scriptures are posted throughout her home. "Growths and tumors have no right to my body," Greer said.

Her four children and husband of 17 years are her biggest cheerleaders. "My husband said look how far you've come. The kids are looking at ya.. I'm looking at ya. When we feel like giving up we're like you know what? Mom didn't quit. Mom could have easily said I'm not gonna do this anymore, but I'm not gonna do that."

Greer's network of supporters goes beyond her family members with her drive and determination serving as an example for others. "Its beyond words to know it's a constant struggle for her to go out and walk and to know she's motivated enough is inspiring," said Nate Moore,Two Cities Race Director.

As Greer prepares for race day she is grateful for her physical and emotional strength. "I wanna be able to give hope to someone else. That they might feel like giving up and it is hard and sometimes it does hurt. And you keep moving."
