Trump speaks at California GOP convention

BURLINGAME, Calif. (KFSN) -- While protestors greeted Donald Trump Friday as he entered the California Republican Convention in Burlingame, Trump continued on unabated.

You saw what happened to Trump trying to get into the banquet hall, protests. And once he entered, he told the delegates about it with the ease of a stand-up comic.

"My wife called, she said there are helicopters following you and then we went under a fence through a fence," Trump to the crowd. "Oh boy, it was like crossing the border."

After that, in a rambling speech punctuated by one-liners, Trump listed his accomplishments in the primary season so far. He went after familiar targets like Ted Cruz and the media and gave these delegates plenty of "red meat" regarding Hillary Clinton.

"And, by the way, do I look forward to beating her," Trump said referring to Clinton.

The billionaire's speech proved short on specifics and issues important to California but he delivered a simple message on immigration the California Republicans wanted to hear.

"We want people to come into the country," he said. "But they must do it legally."

In California, Trump has a comfortable lead in the polls over Cruz but the Central Valley could be a battleground between the two as Trump tries to earn a clean sweep of all 172 California delegates.

To win central California, state GOP officer Marcelino Valdez of Fresno says Trump must start focusing on Valley issues.

"I think if Trump wants to be competitive in the Valley, he's going to have to address the water issue that's extremely important to us," he explained.

Trump seemed to win over the room full of Republicans even though many of them still support Cruz or candidate John Kasich.

Despite differences, he emphasized party unity in the fall.

"And what's going to happen is going to be so special," he said. "We have to come together. We have to pick our nominee. We have to go out and do what we have to do. And I'm telling you, you are going to have an unbelievably good result in November."
