Suspected DUI driver leaves man critical after Fresno crash

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- We are learning more about a suspected DUI driver who is accused of critically injuring a man in a crash.

Fresno Police say 46-year-old Ramona Alvarez ran a stop light Wednesday at Clinton and Maroa Avenues and broadsided a truck.

When Fresno Police found, Lt. Joe Gomez with the department says she was aggressive and speaking gibberish.

"She was not very cooperative," he said. "Her behavior was erratic."

This was after she wrecked her car and police say witnesses spotted her swerving in and out of traffic just before she ran a stop light and slammed into the driver side of a pickup truck.

The driver of the truck was critically injured.

"Broken bones, internal bleeding and he's in surgery right now," Gomez said.

Authorities say Alvarez was driving on a suspended license and she appeared to be on drugs. She was arrested for felony DUI and taken away in an ambulance.

"Possibly under the influence, maybe prescription drugs, maybe other drugs," Gomez said. "It could be a medical condition involved."

If she was driving under the influence, it wouldn't be the first time. Back in 2008, Alvarez was convicted of DUI and sent to prison for two years.

After she was released, she was placed on probation and she was stopped in 2013 for driving, illegally.

This crash, Gomez says, could send her back to prison.

"If the other driver dies," he said. "Then it's going to be a pretty serious felony charge for her."
