This week's showdown with San Diego State
Bulldogs head coach Jeff Tedford and his team have a lazer focus that will not allow them to get too fired up

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- "It's nice to be where we are right now, but there is a lot of football left," said Bulldogs Head Coach Jeff Tedford.

Tedford and his team have a laser focus that will not allow them to get too fired up about being atop the West Division at 3-0 heading into this week's showdown at San Diego State.

"Their job is grind, refine and compete. Our coaches job is teach, critique and demand. That's what we have to stay too, it doesn't matter what happened last week or the weeks before," said Tedford.

The next task at hand, a road game at San Diego State on Saturday night.

A key will be stopping RB Rashaad Penny who has rushed for just under 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games this season.

"He's physical, has great speed. Can run inside and outside. So you have to get a lot of hats on him to get him down, it all starts up front," said Tedford.

Add to the matchup-it is a rivalry game with first place on the line as well as some hardware in the battle for the old oil can trophy.

"When things are involved, like the Oil Can, I think that's icing on the cake. It's something we will be aware of but that's not the total motivation of this game. This is really just about this week's opportunity to compete against the best team in our conference really. So really, that's the motivation to compete against a great football team on the road," said Tedford.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night in San Diego.
