VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Kaweah Delta Medical Center was handed the keys to a brand new home for families with loved ones staying in the hospital. The Visalia duplex may be called the Rotary Respite House but to families moving in it will be called home.

"We can sit around and pat ourselves on the back, but that's not what this is about really. The only thing this is about is the people that are going to get to use it. These are people in crisis and it's a difficult time in their life and this is going to give them a little sunshine in their life," said Don Hutton, Visalia Rotary Community Foundation.

Hutton is not only a Visalia Rotarian but also the project manager. He said it's a project five years in the making. A haven where families with loved ones staying at Kaweah Delta Medical Center can retreat.

"It really represents a place where someone in crisis, and I mean in crisis, can actually have a little respite."

The duplex consists of a three bedroom and two bath unit and the other is a two bedroom two bath-- both are completely furnished. Each will be a single family unit and Kaweah Delta's Social Services Department will be the administrator.

"They'll decide who gets to use it and give them the keys. They'll do the cleaning and take care of the property," said Hutton.

The home is just two blocks away from Kaweah Delta Medical Center and is truly a community effort. In addition to the Rotary Community Foundation and various donations, the lead architect and contractor donated their time and fees.

"When you have a passion and you have an idea that makes sense to people, the people of Visalia will jump on board and people start donating," said Hutton.
