Crews spray for new mosquito found in Valley

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- A new mosquito has been discovered in the Valley -- raising concerns for the spread of new diseases.

The yellow fever mosquito was recently found in Clovis. This is the first time the species has been detected in California and commonly bites during the day.

On Saturday, the Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District was out spraying for the pest. They're asking people to be aware of any mosquitoes in their area and contact the district if the bugs are a problem.

"It is a new mosquito to this area so if people notice mosquitoes that are biting during the day, we ask them to call the district, and we want people to prevent production of this mosquito in their backyard by eliminating any unnecessary water source," said Steve Mulligan, district manager of the Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in any water that has been stagnant for a week. That includes dog water dishes, containers under potted plants and rain gutters.
