FILLMORE, Calif. (KFSN) -- A California firefighter who disappeared during a backpacking trip has been found dead in the wilderness.

Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Don Aguilar says the body of 36-year-old Mike Herdman was found Friday in a rugged cliff area north of Fillmore, California.

Herdman and a friend were hiking in the Los Padres National Forest on June 13 when his dog ran off. The firefighter chased after his pet, named Duke, barefoot and wearing only shorts.

The dog was found Sunday in the parking lot where Herdman had parked his car.

About 375 people have spent about 5,250 hours scouring more than 50 square miles of rugged terrain to find Herdman.

The Associated Press and KABC-TV Los Angeles, CA contributed to this report.
