DUI patrols are stepping up to keep you safe this holiday. Police in the South Valley arrested several people accused of driving under the influence just this weekend.
VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two different DUI operations were held this weekend in the South Valley. In total, 7 people were arrested. The first operation arrested drivers who police say were impaired. The second arrested drivers with warrants for their arrest for driving under the influence charges. The push is to make the roads safer during the holidays.
It's one of the busiest times on the road, as people put together last-minute plans and head to celebrations. Visalia police say everywhere people decide to get behind the wheel after drinking.
"Thousands of people get killed needlessly just because somebody didn't want to take responsibility for their actions," said Damon Maurice with the Visalia Police Department.
Maurice wants people to make a plan so they aren't putting their lives and others at risk. "Be responsible if you're going to choose to drink alcohol," he said.
Visalia police arrested three people Friday night during a patrol looking for drunk drivers. More than 60 warrants were served looking for people charged with DUI who had missed court dates. Four people were arrested.
"We want to keep people safe and that begins with taking dangerous people off the roadways," said Maurice.
The operations are part of the department's "Operation Safe Holiday." The campaign began in November and runs through New Year's. Police say the holidays and Fourth of July celebrations are when they see the biggest spike in drinking and driving.
"Have a sober driver always available to you," said Maurice.
If you don't, they want you to stay off the roads. If you do drive, officers say they'll be looking out for you. If you're driving and think you spot a drunk driver, you can always report it -- just call 911.
