FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- UPDATE: On Wednesday morning, Action News found in the jail bookings that a 54-year-old man has been arrested by Fresno police for several felony charges, including murder and driving drunk and causing a crash resulting in injury or death.
We do not know yet if the two incidents are linked.
Original story follows.
----------------------------
A dimly lit portion of Valentine Avenue near Shields is closed off in west central Fresno. Police tape and flashing lights gave some insight into the severity of the situation.
"They were walking northbound on Valentine, they did not see the car approach, the victim was struck," said Fresno Police Lt.
Police say the victim is a 16-year-old boy, and the impact killed him. He was with his 14-year-old friend at the time.
According to detectives, they were walking northbound on Valentine just a little after 6 p.m. when a driver ran into them.
The 14-year old survived.
"He also sustained some of the impact. However, he didn't sustain injuries. He got up and went and called for help,"
Police say the driver is a 54-year-old man. He's been tested for drugs and alcohol.
"At this point the detectives are looking into that, we are not ruling that out yet."
Detectives are now trying to determine who was at fault. Did the driver veer off the road and hit the teen? Or were they already on the street?
Police tell Action News if the driver is at fault he could face charges.
