Fresno man in critical condition after officer-involved shooting

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno man remains in critical condition after being shot by two Fresno police officers. The man has been identified as Freddy Centeno.

Late Thursday morning, police received a 9-1-1 call from a woman who said she had been threatened by a man with a gun. When officers responded, they saw Centeno on the street. They said they opened fire after he refused their orders to show his hands, and then reached for what appeared to be a weapon. Deputy Fresno Police Chief Pat Farmer says it was a water nozzle that looked like a gun.

Deputy Chief Pat Farmer explained, "It looks like the handle off of a sprayer, it's black in color it has a trigger on it, it's not a water gun but it's some type of spray device that looks like a pistol."

Farmer said the two veteran police officers who shot Centeno were both wearing body cameras and he said the video should show exactly what happened.

Freddy Centeno's family said he suffered from mental health and drug problems. According to family, they don't believe he posed a threat to police. Officers said Centeno has an extensive criminal record and was considered a "mentally disordered parolee."

Police also note, he had been a patient in the state mental hospital. He remains in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.
