Valley braces for high temperatures

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- With the extreme heat, we're already seeing alerts for Central California residents.

PG&E anticipates there will be an impact on the power grid today as people turn on their air conditioning to stay cool. The utility will enact power saving programs like their Smart AC program.

PG&E officials say the program saves power and money on your utility bill with the addition of a box outside your air conditioning unit.

"What it does is it cycles your air conditioner in 15 minute increments, and hopefully you won't even notice a change in the ambient temperature in your home. But you're using about half of the electricity you would otherwise be using," said Denny Boyles, PG&E.

The effects on the power grid are expected to be felt across the state. Utility companies say it's best to avoid using large appliances, like your washer and dryer, until late in the evening.

The heat is also impacting Valley air quality. Air officials have already issued warnings for people who are sensitive to pollution. They say the heat and wildfires burning across the state are reducing air quality.

"We anticipate that folks will be feeling the impacts of this wildfire for the next several days, definitely through the weekend," said Jamie Holt, Valley Air District.

Doctors say people who have trouble breathing, or serious health problems, should stay inside, if possible. Especially, between noon and 6 p.m. -- the hottest part of the day.
