Protected Birds Allegedly Crushed by Tractor

5/15/2008 Fresno, CA Now, federal wildlife officials are investigating.

A botanist said this all happened somewhere between Pixley and Earlimart in Tulare County late last month. The woman spotted a huge flock of white-faced Ibis circling the field. She went to investigate, and found more than 3,000 eggs and hatchlings had been mowed over by harvesting equipment.

It's estimated less than 15,000 of these birds now inhabit the wetlands in the Central Valley.
