Free Lunch for Farm Workers

A valley family knows what it's like to work under the hot sun. Now that they own several successful businesses, they go back every summer to where it all started. It's the end of the workday for this "cuadrilla"-- or group of farm workers in Selma, and-- they are in for a surprise. Free food and drinks for all forty of them ... Courtesy of the De Alba family.

"It's a fiesta, " says Raul De Alba, president of Jalisco Jewlers. "We bring them their complete lunch, we bring them gifts and they just have fun and we have fun with them."

The group won the free lunch in a radio contest. Jose Rodriguez was the one who signed them up. "I was happy when I saw that they were here, because at first I was nervous that they might not come."

These farm workers have been picking grapes since six in the morning. Foreman Nicolas Vela says so far, they've had no heat-related problems. "We get treated right. Where we work we got good farmer take care of us, we have plenty of everything."

Raul de Alba remembers the hot summers working valley fields. "We never forget where we came from-- so we try to go back every year to remind us of where we came from."

He and his family have been delivering free lunch parties like this one for 16 years ... He says it's their way of giving back and saying thank you for the work these men do. "We're very thankful for that and we appreciate them."

Farm workers can sign up at Jalisco Jewelers, De Alba Travel and Los Panchos Mexican Restaurant. They choose a different group every week-- and have delivered free lunches as far as Delano and Coalinga, sometimes feeding up to 80 workers.
