Flood of Support for Fire Victims

October 22, 2008 6:36:33 PM PDT
Deanna Brown thought she was meeting a stranger wanting to donate some old stuff. Lisa Garrett said, "I happened to see it on the news then when he got home I said hurry come watch this. I said I want everything from our yard sale, anything we can donate, he said great, let's do it."But she didn't know Lisa and Roy Garrett. The Fowler couple loaded the back of their SUV and made a very personal delivery. Everything from shiny fire trucks to clothes. Lisa said, "This is all boys pajamas. And more toys." Toys that are still in their wrappers.

Teri Hardisty also saw Deanna's story on Action News. She told Deanna, "When it does happen I want to be able to help. I need your kids' ages, I need to know boy or girl."

Hardisty's daughter is in the same Girl Scout troop as one of Deanna's daughters. And when she saw that the mother of 10 lost the family home to a fire she made some calls and sent some emails. She said, "Our girls want to be able to help her and help the family and do whatever we need to help you."

With tears in her eyes, Deanna said the help and support was overwhelming. "I'm thankful. I thought we were going to walk out of here with nothing."

Then Roy Garrett, the owner of The Exit nightclub in Fresno told her about his plans to help her. "We want to do a benefit show for you, raise as much money as we can and try to get you into your own place as soon as possible." Then he gave her a check to help her and her kids get back on their feet.

Deanna shook her head and said, "It's crazy. There are people out there willing to help." Hardisty told Deanna, "Don't feel like you have to do it alone. You have people here to help you and support you." The Red Cross is also helping the family.

The kids are staying with relatives while their mother stays with her next door neighbor. The kids couldn't go to school Wednesday today because they didn't have any clothes.

An account has been set up for the Brown family at Educational Employees Credit Union if you would like to help them. The account number is 116-172-08.
