Darryl Bowen said, "Your property goes up you know you're gonna pay more taxes. I think I'd rather pay more taxes."
Fresno County has re-assessed the property value of some 50-thousand homes which were purchased in the last 3-and-a-half years.
Asst. Assessor-Recorder Timothy Leming said, "It's those people that bought after this big incline that purchased up here, now the market's gone down here. So therefore we're trying to find people that were actually affected by the decline or I should say their assessed value was affected by the decline."
No one wants to be over-taxed. If you believe your assessment is incorrect or your property has been overlooked you can still file an assessment appeal application with the board of supervisors.
"It's a double-edged sword. Nobody wants to see the value of their property go down but on the other hand the one silver lining in the cloud is that we do have a process in order to have their assessment reduced appropriately."
22-hundred appeal applications have already been filed. You can find the form on the Fresno County website or pick one up at the Hall of Records. It may take a year to process but eventually you may get a property tax refund. Darrell Bowen says it's worth looking into.
"Yeah I think so. I don't think everyone has done that."
Technically the deadline to submit the assessment appeal is November 30th, which is Sunday. The actual deadline will be the following work day, Monday December 1st.
