Obama Blows the Whistle on Iran at G20 Summit

September 25, 2009 1:34:45 PM PDT
Presenting a united front at the start of the global summit, President Obama, France, and Britain blew the whistle on Iran. President Obama said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has been building a covert uranium enrichment facility near Qom for several years."

The shocker comes one day after the allies presented detailed evidence to watchdog inspectors in Vienna about the underground secret plant.

President Obama said: "Iran's decision to build yet another nuclear facility without notifying the IAEA represents a direct challenge to the basic compact at the center of the non-proliferation regime."

Gordon Brown, British Prime Minister said: "The level of deception by the Iranian government and the scale of what we believe is the breach of international commitments will shock and anger the whole international community and it will harden our resolve."

Iran has long argued its nuclear program is all devoted to production of peaceful civilian nuclear power. The US doesn't buy it and says the configuration of the secret plant shows that is not true. President Obama is making this public on a broad world stage, during the opening moments of the G20 summit, an expanded global gathering which now takes the place of the old G8 on economic policy planning.

And all this comes less than a week before the US and its allies are to sit down in talks with Iran. What is not yet clear, will some of Iran's defenders, like Russia and China, now join the US with threats of severe new sanctions if Iran does not change its behavior by the end of this year.
