Shoplifting Suspects in Clovis Crash after Chase

CLOVIS, Calif. Witness Yonas Paulos said he was pumping gas at Barstow and Peach when he heard the car bottom out, speeding over a bump in the road. "I see a car just going one hundred miles per hour. It could be just a guess, it could be more. It was the bump, and I just hear boom!" said Paulos.

A few seconds later, the car ended up in a Fresno State field after crossing the Willow intersection. Clovis Police say the chase started after an officer responded to a shoplifting call at Wal-Mart. "He pulled into the parking lot, saw them running out of the store, saw them hop into their car and then tried to pull them over. Obviously, they didn't stop," said police spokesperson Janet Stoll-Lee.

Clovis Police say by the time the car hit a fence on Barstow, it was likely traveling one hundred miles per hour. The car's passenger was ejected but was talking when emergency crews arrived. Police say the driver actually tried to run away after the crash, but eventually surrendered. The stolen electronics were close by. "Things like Wii video games, that kind of thing. But there were a variety of electronics that were found in his pocket. Loss prevention came out to the scene and positively identified the suspects," said Stoll-Lee.

The two suspects are now facing felony charges. Meanwhile, witnesses like Paulos say they're just glad the car lost control near the empty field. "He could have run into the gas station, while I was pumping gas. So I'm very blessed," said Paulos.

The two suspects have been identified as 20 year old Arnoldo Astorga and 19 year old Eric Guerra. The vehicle was registered to an Orange Cove address. They're facing felony burglary charges and evading arrest.
