Fresno Man Arrested in Deadly Hit and Run

FRESNO, Calif. "Hard. Very hard. Trying to get through. Very emotional. It's tough everyday." Malik Kwame turned himself in to authorities Thursday afternoon. He's accused of running over nine-year-old Gage Castillo in November and then leaving the scene.

The suspect was taken into custody at the Fresno County Jail for the hit and run accident of nine-year-old Gage Castillo. He was released Thursday night. Detectives say he turned himself in Thursday and the family says they're relieved but still angry.

"Because no matter how much he tells me sorry he can't bring my son back," said Gabriel Castillo.

Folded in his hand, Gabriel Castillo holds a confession letter from the man accused of killing his son gage.

Gage was riding his bike with his uncle on November first on Ashlan and Marks when two cars were headed in their direction. One car stopped, but another kept on going and hit the nine-year-old. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

34-year-old Malik Kwame turned himself into Fresno Police Thursday afternoon. The break in the case came when Kwame's car was repossessed in February. Detectives were then able to identify him as the suspect in Gage's death.

"I feel as if he should have done the right thing was stay there or at least go home and realize what he had done, he could have turned himself in," said Gage's cousin Mara.

Also in the confession letter, Kwame says the mother of his unborn child was riding with him at the time of the accident and would have put her life at risk if he swerved to avoid hitting gage.

"I don't know what to believe. I wasn't there, I don't know. I don't know but, I do want something done, and if there was a second person we'd like to know who that person is too and why they didn't come forward," said Gabriel Castillo.

Fabriel says they're relieved to see someone behind bars for the death of gage, but it's still of little relief to him and the rest of the family. "That doesn't show me that he was remorseful enough. That just shows me he had no choice because he was caught either way."

Fresno Police detectives did say that Malik Kwame was very cooperative, very remorseful. He was booked into the jail for felony hit and run and driving with a suspended license. His bail was set at $5,300 dollars, which he posted.
