Northeast Fresno home damaged by fireworks

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened just after midnight on Recreation near Birch.

The Fresno Fire Department says the family living in the home dumped the fireworks they ignited earlier in the evening into the trash can.

The fireworks ended up setting the trash can on fire. The fire spread up the backside of the house and in to the garage attic. A neighbor spotted the fire and called 911.

Firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames. Monday morning they're saying this is a lesson everyone can learn from.

"One of the things that is very important for people to do is when they use fireworks is to make sure they are completely doused in water and completely out. we've seen this quite frequently, they go into a garbage can and then a few hours later they will ignite the garbage can and have gone to bed by that time. you end up with a serious fire," Charles Leach said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage attic. But everything inside the attic was destroyed.
