Shaw Ave. crash causes chain reaction

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened just after 1 a.m. Thursday morning on Shaw and Chestnut.

Fresno Police say two SUV's crashed in to a nearby power pole, sheering it off the ground. Two people in one SUV tried to run away from the scene, but officers were able to catch-up with them.

Police say it's likely one of the cars was speeding on Shaw Avenue moments before the crash.

"At this point we believe the individuals who ran from the scene may have been the vehicles that caused the collision. But we're still very early in the investigation. We do have four people that were involved. We have some severe injuries but fortunately the people are stable who were in all the vehicles," said John Papaleo with the Fresno Police Department.

As a result of the crash, the power went out for a few hours for 650 PG&E customers in Northeast Fresno between Bullard and Ashlan. But PG&E was able to get the lights back on for all those customers before 5 a.m. Thursday morning.

Before the lights came back on, traffic signal lights were out in the area. That caused another crash just a short time later at Shaw and Cedar.

Fresno Police say a black car travelling eastbound on Shaw Avenue collided with a car travelling southbound on Cedar.

Two people in the black car ended up on the side of a Marie Calendar's restaurant. They had to be taken to the hospital.

The two passengers in the other car were not injured.
