Hmong New Year: Old traditions with a modern twist

"The Sounds", a popular Hmong rock and roll band played at the Paul Paul Theater at the Fresno Fairgrounds. Many say this was a fusion of old and new Hmong celebrations. Traditional courtship games like the ball toss were played by young men and women. Monday was also the kick off to the Miss Hmong Pageant.

Those celebrating the Hmong New Year at the Regional Sports Complex in southwest Fresno enjoyed cultural dishes, singing and a soccer game. Tuesday is the third day of the Hmong New Year celebration -- doors at both locations open at 8am.
