According to the California Highway Patrol, the man and his coworkers were digging trenches along the road. The man crossed the road to grab a shovel and when he crossed back, he was struck by an oncoming car. The impact sent his body about 100 feet.
CHP officials say the coworkers watched the crash and are traumatized over the incident.
At this time, CHP officials say the crash appears to be an accident. Commander Dave Paris says the female driver was driving the speed limit and it appears that she did not see the man. The female driver has not been cited for the crash.
Traffic has been rerouted as law enforcement investigates the fatal crash.
