American student stabbed during Egypt uprising

Fresno, Calif.

The State Department says Andrew Pochter was photographing an uprising in Egypt when a protestor apparently stabbed him. The Kenyon College student was in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria to teach English to young students during the summer.

His loved ones say he went to Egypt because he cared deeply about the Middle East and planned to live and work there after graduating. His family also described him as a wonderful young man looking for new experiences in the world and ways to share his talents.

State media in Egypt have reported that 70 people were injured in the clashes.
