Firefighters Helping Firefighters organization hosts inaugural benefit concert for injured Houston firefighters

HOUSTON

The group put on a day-long "Concert 4 Heroes" Sunday at Discovery Green to raise money to help the firefighters injured in the deadly five-alarm Southwest Motel fire on May 31.

It was a way for Houstonians to honor those who put life and limb on the line that day, and a way for firefighters to enjoy the support of the community.

It was no ordinary concert at Discovery Green. Fans camped out through the sweltering afternoon heat to listen to music and to help firefighters.

"We realized that we needed the great city of Houston, who were already asking how they could support us, to come together," Denis Laroche with Firefighters Helping Firefighters said.

Hundreds of people answered that call and came together at the concert, buying tickets and t-shirts, and even signing a book to express their thoughts to the heroes.

It was one way Houstonians could reach out to a fire department that has been in mourning the last two months.

"When we lost our three brothers and our sister, the city really came together for us," HFD Capt. Ruy Lozano said.

The firefighters who were hurt in the deadly blaze have a long road ahead of them. The benefit concert will help pay for things their families need while they're in the hospital, like home maintenance and hotel fees. The funds will also help with in-home care and with retrofitting their homes to make them handicap-accessible.

"Doing this, it shows a lot for us," said one firefighter in attendance.

There were firefighters at the Concert for Heroes, too, enjoying the music and soaking up the support from Houstonians. It was an event that organizers say won't be the last.

"Firefighters Helping Firefighters expects from here on this will be an annual event for firefighters and grow to help all firefighters," Laroche said.
