Woman critical after Crossroads nightclub shooting

FRESNO, Calif.

"Officers arrived out there, discovered two victims -- a husband and a wife -- were shot," said Fresno police Lt. Mark Salazar. "They were taken to the hospital. The male is going to be OK. The female though is in very critical condition right now."

Salazar says the couple got into some kind of an argument with others in the bar -- others police suspect are gang members.

"We do know West Fresno gang members were in attendance at that bar. Some type of disturbance broke out, and there were shots fired," said Salazar.

Police say the couple, a woman in her 20s and a man in his 30s, did not have gang connections. Whoever shot them left the bar. Police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video trying to identify the suspects.

The shooting comes as the Crossroads is still under a form of probation from the State Alcoholic Beverage Control office. Christine Weldon is the District Director for the agency's Fresno office. She says the problems at Crossroads started in 2011.

"Regarding fights, assaults, batteries, public intoxication. And then at the end of 2012, we filed an accusation against the business for allowing those kind of events to continue," said Weldon.

As a result, the nightclub was required to post security guards on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but not on Sunday nights, which are usually quiet.

Weldon says the state will now look at what happened here Sunday night.

"In reviewing the reports if we determine the licensee had some responsibility and it results in an accusation, it could result in a suspension. I don't know if it would result in a revocation, just have to see what the circumstances are," she said.
