Prosecutors say in 2010, Ramon Manzo Jr. and another man named Ezequiel Castillo opened fire on the boyfriend and girlfriend because the boy was wearing a blue shirt. Manzo learned his sentence on Friday. Castillo will be tried later.
Police say the couple wasn't a part of a gang. Investigators say they were just standing outside a home at the time.
Boyfriend Justin Gonzalez suffered only minor injuries, but Monica Garcia nearly died and was left partially paralyzed by the shooting. After months of rehabilitation, Garcia graduated with her high school in 2011.
