Two Fresno boys earn Willie Mac Award

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Baseball fans know the names Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey and now you can add Fresno natives Jadan Ruiz and Hector Arzimendi-Bernal to that list.

"We take a look at our program, the participants that we have and we see what the kids are kind of doing. So these ones kind of stood out to us and show those aspects that they were looking for, for the Junior Giants program for this Wille Mac Award," said Fresno Parks and Recreation Commissioner Janell Olivares.

The Junior Giants program has more than 25,000 participants and both Jadan and Hector were among 87 players to earn the Willie Mac award exemplifying the program's four bases of character development.

"Four words we go by for the Junior Giants. It's integrity, confidence, leadership and teamwork," explained Junior Giants coach Daniel Ruiz.

The boys accepted their award at AT&T Park in San Francisco which included a unique baseball bat.

"It has your name on it and signed by the legend Willie McCovey. They called my name and I had handshaked this guy named Tiny (Felder) and they just take pictures," said Arzimendi-Bernal.

"When I won the award I was surprised I didn't know what it was, I was surprised I won the Willie Mac Award. I felt a little nervous when I went up there, but I went through it," Jadan Ruiz said.
