The Sierra snow-pack is significantly smaller than average this spring. The Department of Water Resources conducted its final snow survey of the 2008 season.

Monthly measurements are taken in the Sierra high country five times between January and May. They determine how much freshwater runoff will be available during the dry summer months.

Right now, the snow-pack is just 67% of the annual average. That prompted the resources secretary to call for voluntary conservation.
