July 18, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
The highway patrol says a drunk driver hit and killed a teenage boy in Merced County Thursday evening.Officers arrested Lazara Mendoza for suspicion of driving under the influence. They say Mendoza was driving on Turlock Road near Snelling as 14-year old Carlos Meza was riding his bike down an intersecting dirt road.

Officers say Meza pedaled his bike out onto Turlock Road and that's when Mendoza hit him with the vehicle. Meza was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shane Ferriera, Highway Patrol, says "If you do consume alcohol and get behind the wheel, you're taking a risk, at the same time it was a tough position because the boy entered the traffic lanes in front of the person who was driving the vehicle."

Investigators are waiting on blood test results to determine Mendoza's blood alcohol level. He was booked into Merced County jail on misdemeanor charges.
