South Valley Animal Shelter Facing Food Crisis

Fresno, CA, USA Lanie Wagenberg, /*Valley Oak S.P.C.A.*/ "We are basically running out of dog food. That's only happened a few times since we founded the S.P.C.A.

These shelves at the organization's adoption center in the /*Visalia Mall*/ are usually fully stocked with food thanks to donations from local businesses. But now they're suddenly sparse.

Lanie Wagenberg: "We're not getting as much as we usually do from the stores that have donated. They're not able to right now."

Outreach coordinator Lanie Wagenberg believes the slumping economy has forced the stores to cut back on the contributions. It's also led to an increase in the number of animals being dropped off at the shelter by people who simply can't afford to keep their pets. But fortunately, it has not had a noticeable impact on the number of adoptions.

Julie Huang, New Dog Owner: "A lot of pets need help anyway, so instead of buying a new one we thought we can just take one home."

Now the S.P.C.A. is hoping the community will help the pets who are still waiting to find a home by donating food or money.

Lanie Wagenberg: "Right now we have probably a few days worth left, so we wanted to get the word out while we still have food available."

Donations can be dropped off at the Valley Oak S.P.C.A. shelter or the adoption center in the Visalia Mall.

The main shelter is located at 29016 Highway 99, Visalia, CA 93277. It's open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

The adoption center is located inside the Visalia Mall at 2031 S Mooney Blvd Visalia, CA 93277. It's open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1pm-7pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm.
