President Obama appoints first transgender person

President Barack Obama has appointed a transgendered woman to be an advisor to the Commerce Department.

A former test pilot, Amanda Simpson worked for defense contractor Raytheon for more than a decade.

In a statement, Simpson said "As one of the first transgender presidential appointees, I hope that I will soon be one of hundreds, and that this appointment opens future opportunities for many others."
