Wednesday night, Fresno Unified trustees agreed to cut the first $16-million dollars from the 2010-2011 school budgets.

That action means close to 180 teaching positions will be eliminated due to increased class sizes. Nearly 70 teachers who work as instructional coaches could also lose their jobs.

District officials say they will not lay off any permanent teachers, by reassigning them throughout the district. Officials say teacher cuts will come from temporary or new teaching positions.

In two weeks, district officials will lay out "round two" of the budget cuts, which is expected to have an even bigger impact on jobs.
