Donation Jar Stolen From a Fresno Vons Store

FRESNO, Calif.

The collection jar was set up for Matthew Ingalls ... a co-worker who died earlier this year.

Still mourning his son's untimely death, Tom Ingalls says he can hardly stomach the fact that someone stole a donation jar that had been set up in his honor.

"A big insult, a big insult, and I'm sure a lot of people who dropped money in there couldn't afford to do it, so yeah, it's sad," said Ingalls.

Matthew Ingalls was killed this past February when a suspected drunk driver hit him just blocks away from the Vons where he worked. That suspect Juan Lopez ran from the scene and has yet to be caught.

Matthew's co-workers set up the collection jar inside the store to help raise money for his family.

Action News first showed you the surveillance video of the brazen crime on Tuesday. In it, you see a man walk right by the jar, which was full of money at the time, grab it, and leave.

Since the video first aired, Vons management has received several tips, including ones from people who say they know exactly who the suspect is. "It will be a relief if what we're doing by raising the awareness of this and talking about what happened, it will be a relief that some justice is served if he is caught."

Fresno Police say they are following up on all leads. Meanwhile, Tom Ingalls says he is not concerned about the money, but wants to see justice on his son's behalf.

"If he is looking down, I'm sure he's very upset about it. I'm sure he's very impressed by the people who loved him cause that's the main point," said Ingalls.

Again, police say they have not made any arrests related to the theft.

Vons workers have not set up another collection jar to replace the one that was stolen.
