DMV technical upgrades force office closures

FRESNO, Calif.

The DMV office at Blackstone and Sierra in north Fresno and an office in Shafter were closed Tuesday. Wednesday, the DMV in Merced will close. And on Friday, Coalinga's DMV will shut down. All other Valley DMV offices will remain open during the technical upgrades.

As California continues to lurch from day to day without a budget, the department of Motor Vehicles has decided to shut down many of its field offices for an additional day. But it's not to save money, as the usual "furlough Fridays" are supposed to do.

This time, blame it on the IT guys.

"Technical upgrades" will mean the following Central Valley DMV offices will be closed:

Wednesday, Sept. 1: SW Bakersfield, Merced and Tracy

Thursday, Sept. 2: Delano

Friday, Sept. 3: Coalinga and Auburn

To find the nearest open field office, the department says people should visit the DMV website at http://DMV.ca.gov where a number of services are offered including payments for vehicle registration and driver license renewals via secure debit transactions, filing a notice of release of liability, change of address, and scheduling appointments.
