Fundraising run for Diane Romero's sons

FRESNO, Calif.

Ofie Cruz is going to run 31 miles from Merced to Snelling and back to raise scholarship money for Diane Romero's two teenage sons.

Romero was stabbed to death last month, and her husband is now in jail facing murder charges. The couple's sons both attend Merced High School. Cruz knows the family and says she wanted to help Diane's children in the best way she knows how.

"It will be hard, any long distance run is hard, but it's for a good cause, and she will give me strength to do this."

The run starts Saturday morning. Then Saturday night, the gym at Merced College will be dedicated in honor of Diane Romero's father, Don Reid.

Reid coached basketball at the college for 29 years and led his team to several championships.
