The 2012 World Ag Expo "Forage Challenge", encourages farmers and ranchers in 11 western states to enter their best alfalfa hay, or corn silage. Up to $18,000 in cash prizes will be awarded based on lab analyses and a visual evaluation of entries by dairy nutrition and forage production experts.

The deadline to enter is December 15th. Details can be found on the World Ag Expo website.

The number of universities offering courses, certificates or degrees in organic or sustainable agriculture is on the rise.

Experts say the growth is fueled by consumer demand for healthier food. Shoppers also want food produced on a sustainable farm or in an environmentally responsible way.

At U.C. Davis, students are lining up for the new sustainable agriculture and food systems program. Washington State University already offers an organic agriculture degree. The school recently became the first in the country to offer an organic agriculture certificate online.
