Merced council votes down commercial development

MERCED, Calif.

Dozens of community members who were against the project, filled council chambers Monday night and a vote wasn't even held until after midnight.

The re-zoning proposal before the council would have allowed a property owner to develop land along Mercy Avenue for commercial offices. But people who live in the neighborhood want to keep the land zoned for residential use. They voiced concerns about increased traffic, the risk of crime, and the danger to children.

In the end, the council voted five to two to deny the request.
