Madera Police say the shooting happened outside the AM-PM store on north Gateway near Yosemite Avenue around 11:30 Saturday night.
Officers say a man walked up to a Mercedes parked outside the store and asked if the passenger was in a gang.
When the man answered back that he was not -- the suspect started shooting.
Detectives recovered at least three rounds from the Mercedes. One struck the passenger and medics rushed them to the hospital.
The victim has not yet been identified.
Matt Wiles with the Madera Police Department said, "We don't know that information right now. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. I know that he was here with family from out of town for a family event"
Police say the gunman ran from the scene before getting away in a car.
