The fire started in a field just after two o'clock Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Madison and Valentine avenues.

Firefighters say the windy weather and dry conditions caused the fire to change direction at least five times.

At one point - the flames threatened a nearby neighborhood - burning right up to the fence line of several backyards.

One firefighter was rushed to the hospital - to be treated for smoke inhalation. Three others were treated for heat stroke.

No homes were damaged. The cause is under investigation.
